Damn Nation (2005)

This book collects the three issue mini-series from Dark Horse Comics and is written by Andrew Cosby who was a co-creator of the TV show Eureka. Art is again by Jason Shawn Alexander – this time credited as J. Alexander.

A drifting Russian freight ship is brought into Florida for investigation. Everyone on board is assumed to be dead but some are infected with an unknown pathogen and rise as zombie creatures. Cut to 5 years later and the US government has relocated to London and the country has been abandoned and isolated from the rest of the world. When a message is received that a cure has been found a coalition task force is sent covertly into the quarantine zone to find the source and recover the cure if it exists. But not everyone wants a cure discovered and will go to any lengths to sabotage its recovery - alive or dead.

The story is decent enough but does rely on a number of well worn modern zombie tropes. It is also a bit too short at 3 issues long. I would have liked a bit more development in the story (such as how the whole country came to be left to the infected) and the characters. Also the artwork of the infected was great but there wasn't enough action involving them for me.

However, if you can pick it up from your local library or for a good price, as I did, then it is a good enough addition to the zombie literature with some ideas that I would have liked to see explored further. The art by Alexander is again terrific and it is worth a read for that alone.
